Calgary International Airport is among Canada's busiest airports, connecting millions of passengers annually to destinations across North America, Europe, and Asia. As a major gateway to Western Canada, the airport manages complex operations across multiple terminals serving diverse international passenger demographics.
In 2015, with the opening of a new international terminal, Calgary International Airport partnered with Simpleway to implement a sophisticated "Call-to-Gate" boarding system that would increase operational efficiency, enhance revenue opportunities, and deliver superior passenger experience through coordinated automated announcements and visual communications.
Simpleway deployed Gate User Interface across approximately 90 gates, empowering gate agents to orchestrate the entire boarding process. The interface allows operators to select individual airlines and trigger customized pre-recorded announcements for each boarding stage, with flexibility to modify variable elements in real-time based on actual passenger flow. This approach enables staff to adapt dynamically to changing circumstances and reduce bottlenecks.
The system delivers multilingual voice communication in English, French, Mandarin, and Japanese, ensuring international travelers receive critical information in languages they understand. The integration of visual paging and digital display content management provides gate agents with control over both audio and visual communications, allowing coordinated messaging throughout passenger journeys.
The implementation has delivered measurable improvements in passenger experience, particularly for international travelers benefiting from clear, multilingual communication. Gate agents report enhanced efficiency in managing announcements and visual content, while the automated boarding process has contributed to smoother operations and better passenger flow.
